Things I am doing:
- I hang my laundry outside to dry during the spring, summer and fall, and inside on a line during the winter.
- I’ve changed out my most-used light bulbs with compact fluorescent, and am replacing all with compact fluorescent.
- I unplug my computer/printer/office phone/etc. power strip every night, and it stays unplugged over the weekend.
- The oven/stove is unplugged when not using oven. I light gas stove top with match when needed.
- I’ve limited my use of the air conditioner during the summer (about 5 days during the summer of ’07; 3 days in ’08; 1 day in ’09))
- I keep the temp at 52 degrees (day and night) during the winter.
- I bought a large industrial fan which makes being inside during hot weather very comfortable. I didn’t have it above low all summer.
- I have a ceiling fan in my office – big fan of ceiling fans.
- I have insulated black-out drapes on the north side of my house, and I keep these closed when the hot sun is beating down during the summer or the cold air is blowing in the winter.
- I have lots of trees on the south side of my house, and I tend to keep these windows open when it isn’t terribly hot outdoors.
- I’ve been planning my errands and trips so I only need to be in the car a day or two a week.
