Yesterday I was fortunate enough to spent part of the day with friends of mine.
At lunch one served a meal made primarily of items purchased at a local farmers market… including some wonderful goat cheese. This person also showed me the bandannas he had purchased for the purpose of using instead of facial tissue. He has also changed almost all the lights in his house to the compact florescent.
Another friend told me that he has now started riding the bus to work instead of driving. He “discovered” the bus when he needed to get to work on the day he was to be picked up at work for a week-long vacation. Evidently he enjoyed riding the bus that day and now walks just a few blocks to the bus stop and takes the bus to work most days.
Now none of these friends wish to participate in the Riot for Austerity with me, but they have changed many parts of their lives to significantly reduce carbon emission.
On another note, I have gotten a few folks at my church to participate in the Riot for Austerity (see links for info on this), and we are recording our monthly usage on a bulletin board at the church. What I have discovered is that most of the folks I have spoken with use far less than the “average American” – and we have a handful of hybrids in the parking lot on Sunday. I feel very honored to be part of such an environmentally aware group of people!
