Finally, my tomatoes have started to ripen and the first two will be ready to pick in the next day or two! They have been green for over a month and was beginning to wonder if had done something wrong.
Also, I picked two more cucumbers – but it doesn’t look like any of the smaller ones are growing anymore. I didn’t have very good luck with the cucumbers, even though the plant got so large and lush looking so quickly. It does appear that either the hot weather or some insect has had an effect on the cucumber leaves.
During my channel surfing on Saturday, I came across the last part of a butternut squash soup being made on the Food Channel. I got the ingredients (more or less) but not necessarily how they were put together. Not being much of a cook, I did what I could. At least I discovered the correct way to cut and skin the butternut squash, and only sliced one finger doing so (no stitched, but pretty bad). Once I had cubed the squash I added a can of chicken broth, some garlic and onions (nope, I didn’t cook them first, but probably should have), and Cumin. I cooked on top of the stove foor 15 minutes, and when the squash was soft, I transferred it all to my blender and… blended. Ta da! I had made soup. Not bad – a little too much garlic taste (ok, I was later told that sauteing would help that). Actually, it was good both hot and cold.
