I know it is a bit odd, but I love it when folks give me junk… it is like Christmas to me. By junk I am referring to all those odds and ends, and pieces of this and that, stuff that would generally go right into the trash. In fact, I have several friends who on their daily walks will pick up junk for me – washers, screws (some very rusted), computer parts, etc. – and package them in a gift bag. I love it, because I use them for my art. Bottle caps, soda tabs, corks, broken jewelry, hub caps, misc. hardware that accumulates in the “junk drawer”, you name it. It is fun to see the different pieces of things which people throw away on a regular basis.
I did a 2 foot by 3 foot piece of art made to look like 3 tulips (available on my website – see art links on right). When I have it hung at an exhibit or show, people will sometimes stand for 15 or 20 minutes picking out all the items I have in it. One person looked at it for a good 10 minutes before shouting – “oh my god, there are cell phone in here.” And yes, there were 3 cell phones.
So, before throwing out that next item, ask yourself…is there anything beautiful I can do with this?… or send it to me. 🙂
