I have always been fascinated by folks who use earth as a roof for their home. I’ve done research on earth shelters – the kind of house made out of old tires, soda cans and dirt. It makes sense, earth is a great insulator. There are now companies which design roofs to include earth or rocks and plants! What could be better? The environmentally friendly building in St. Louis City I’ve mentioned before has just this type of thing happening on its roof! I asked the person responsible for creating this space for information, and he gave me the following: “The squares are called green roof blocks and the bags called green roof paks. The web site is http://www.greenroofblocks.com.”
What fascinated me was that these can even go on your average sloped roof – like mine in the burbs. However, it does look like something best put on with a new roof – and not as an addition.
