Yesterday was beautiful here! 76 degrees and sunny. I took the day to worship in the church of my back yard. I cleaned off the patio of leaves and consolidated what is left of my firewood on to one holder. I mulched leaves stuck in the ivy, and started pulling out the ivy itself.
The goal is to remove all of the ivy growing on my patio and put in a veggie garden in the wonderful soil. This will be a great space – about 20 feet wide and four feet deep. The problems:
- There is a LOT of ivy.
- The ivy roots stack horizontally up to four inches deep. I pulled, yanked, and forced those roots out of the soil – and still only managed to clear a small area. This is going to take some time.
- I still have a stick casting a shadow on part of the patio. Grant it, this stick is a good 80 feet tall and probably six foot around at the base. This will not be easy or cheap to fell.
I would love nothing more than to go out today and work on this some more. But, guess what? The temp has dropped into the 20’s and we are expecting six inches of snow tonight. This roller-coaster is making me crazy! I AM glad that I got a chance to work outside, sit and read outside (in the early evening), and even bar-b-que last night.
So, today I am back at my desk working, glad I got a few clean-up chores done. Glad I was able to start working on pulling the ivy, and glad I got to sit and enjoy the warmth of the sun. It will have to last me until the next warm day… probably several weeks away, yet.
