It has been a while since the weather has been nice and I have either had time (friend in hospital) or been well enough (picked up a bug while visiting in the hospital) to do laundry. A critical point came yesterday when I discovered I either had to do laundry or shop for more of those crucial undergarments. So, I did a load of whites.
My drying line is not very long – it goes from one tree to another in the sunny part of my yard. So, when I filled it for the first time yesterday, it was filled with nothing but those crucial undergarments – 26 of them! I just thought that was the funniest site I had ever seen (OK, I don’t get out much). The second wave (from the same load) was three-quarters socks (yes, I have a lot of white socks – most of which are second-hand that I wear at night to bed – or two or three deep during the winter), and the third wave was pillowcases, tees and bras. The line of undies and the line of socks just really tickled me – I can’t really explain it – but it did.
I did a second load – I washed a few older pillows – having just learned that this was really something I could do (count me as one who just figured that after a number of years – 8 or 10, or when it really started to stink – you threw the pillows away). They looked so odd hanging from my line – but, boy, when I took them down after a number of hours, they smelled soooo good! I had a friend over later in the day to help me pull some weeds, and I made him smell the pillows… I think he thought I was nuts.
It is funny how when I used a clothes dryer, laundry used to be a real hassle – and clothes would sit in the dryer for days or weeks. When I do the laundry outside it doesn’t feel like such a chore, and the clothes are folded when they are dry. Heck, sometimes I even find doing laundry FUN!
