On Tuesday I had hoped to pull the straw/hay, put down papers, and put the stray/hay back over the papers so the seeds wouldn’t take in my new beautiful soil. Well, one of my friends came over and we pulled some weeds, pulled some of the flowering arugula plants and made room for a few of the “thinned” bush bean plants to grow. I got on a phone call, and my friend continued to weed and thin the lettuce and arugula that remained… and then we were going to deal with the straw/hay.
I was on the phone for about 15 minutes when my friend came in pretty wet and told me he was leaving because a big storm was rolling in. A big storm was right! I think I saw Dorothy and Toto fly by. The power in the house surged a number of times, but thankfully we didn’t lose it altogether.
Wednesday it rained and rained and rained.
The good news is that today it is much cooler, and I took a break from my day job for an hour and a half to mow the lawn (which is normally a terribly hot job.) The bad news, I still haven’t dealt with the hay seeds and seedlings – which are getting much taller. AND, as I was mowing today, I wished I had an industrial sized container of Round-Up or some other all purpose weed and grass killer for the grass that has gotten onto my patio and all the poison ivy I found in my yard while mowing it. Some will need to pulled by (a well-gloved) hand, and the rest I can nuke with some powerful killer one of these days.
If I have enough energy I will be back in the garden after work this afternoon. If not, it will be Sunday before I have the time to do that.
