The heat wave has broken – at least for this week. After over a week of HOT, HOT, HOT weather (heat indices in the 100’s), we are back to a comfortable high in the 80’s. Saturday I didn’t leave the house but once, and that was to check on my 100-year-old friend because of the heat, Sunday I couldn’t wait to get outside!
Actually, it cooled off just in time for what I like to think of as the big party St. Louis has every year to celebrate my birthday. Actually, it was LGBT PRIDE weekend and the weather was lovely for the Mass on the Grass (hosted by my church) at one of the local parks, and for watching the parade which was nearly two hours long.
Yesterday morning I surveyed my garden again, and am happy to report that several of the plants that didn’t look like they were ever going to get very big, actually have grown considerably in the last few days. I actually picked a handful of green beans from my plants. The cucumber plants have a number of blossoms on them, and I ate my first strawberry of the season off my plants. I also realized that I have ALOT of tomatoes on my anemic looking plants. True, not as many as if they had gotten enough sun, but with as many as I planted, I will have plenty.
Now, the question is, what do I have to buy to freeze or can to make up for what I had hoped to be able to grow in abundance?
